Summer is clearly looking a little different this year, but your glow doesn’t have to. Even if you’re spending the warm months socially distanced and far from a beach or airport, you can still nab that post getaway glow. The secret is simple: bronzer. “Healthy, glowing, bronzed skin is what most beauty lovers are always trying to achieve and bronzers are the perfect thing to accomplish it with,” says Maddox Lu, Senior National Educator & National Artist, Benefit Cosmetics. “Whether it’s sculpting the cheekbones, balancing your face with a little contour or simply adding a healthy flush, a natural matte bronzer never fails!” To help you get a radiant complexion, Lu breaks down all the bronzer basics.
Finding the right bronzer for your skin tone
“When picking a shade of bronzer, swatch it on the skin and look for a color that is just a few shades deeper than the skin tone,” Lu says. “A safe bet is to pick bronzers with no shimmer and little to no orange pigment for the most believable bronze.” And don’t forget to apply it on your neck, which is the most common mistake people make. “The neck gets the least amount of sun as our jaws tend to shade them. To ensure you look naturally tanned you must make sure that the face, neck and chest all match.”

Powder bronzer versus cream bronzer
They may look similar but they actually have a few key differences. “Powder bronzers have a slight mattifying effect and tend to last longer on the skin,” Lu explains. “Powder bronzer can also be used as a finish powder all over the face. Cream bronzers give a more dewy finish for extra radiance. Even if they don’t contain much shimmer, they still give your skin a beautiful sheen due to their creamy texture.” They can also be applied differently. Lu says powder bronzers are best applied with large fluffy face brushes for all over bronzing, and smaller cheek brushes for tailored needs like the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and jawline. Meanwhile, cream bronzers can be applied with all the same tools as powder bronzers, but they can also be applied with fingers for quick and easy on the go application.
Using bronzer for a sun-kissed glow
There are plenty of ways to wear bronzer and this one certainly tops the list. “To achieve the most believable sun-kissed glow, use a matte bronzer like Benefit Hoola,” Lu says. “First, apply a sheer dust of the bronzer all over your face for a beautiful base color to build on. Then apply a little more on the high planes of your face where the sun would naturally tan more, like your cheekbones, nose bridge, chin, shoulders and collarbones. Lastly, add a sweep of golden-coral blush like Benefit Galifornia to the nose and apples of the cheek for a fresh, out of the sun warmth.”
Contouring with bronzer
Bronzer was born to sculpt those cheekbones! Contouring is all about enhancing bone structure, Lu says. When bronzer is applied to different contours on the face, it can result in a slimming effect, lifting the cheekbones and disguising double chins. If the face is more angular, apply bronzer in a sweeping motion into the hair line to each side of the forehead avoiding the center to create the illusion of a softer, rounder face. Bronzer should be gently dusted in light quick sweeps all over the cheeks and nose, rather than concentrated on the cheekbones and nose bridge to avoid creating more angles by contouring. Lastly, a touch of bronzer on the chin to soften the angles on the lower half of the face will help to soften the angles. If the face is rounder, apply bronzer to the temples and cheekbones sparingly in a gentle back and forth buffing motion to create defined contours. The nose bridge and jawline would also benefit from a gentle sweep of bronzer, so as not to create harsh visible lines.”
Mastering a body bronzer
Bronzer isn’t just for your face it’s also great for an allover glow. To bronze the body with a powder bronzer, lightly moisturize all over with lotion first,” Lu says. This will enable the powder bronzer to apply evenly. When using a gel or cream body bronzer, apply a small amount and blend in a broad, circular motion for an instant bronze look. For a deeper bronze, let it dry and apply another layer.”
